A digital stamp card for your venue: put the paper card inside Apple and Google Wallet

The paper stamp card is simple and loved, and almost every venue has tried it. But it gets lost in a pocket and forgotten at home, and a guest with 7 cards from 7 places carries one of them. The digital card is not new. What is new is that it now lives in the Wallet already on the guest's phone, with no app.

Why stamps work

A 2006 study in the Journal of Marketing Research followed a coffee card with a free coffee after 10 purchases and found the gap between purchases shrank by about 20% from the first stamp to the last. The 20% comes from the university summaries of the paper, not its full text. The meaning is plain: the nearer the reward, the faster the guest comes back.

A second 2006 paper, in the Journal of Consumer Research, gave 300 car-wash customers either a card of 8 stamps or a card of 10 with 2 already stamped. The head start raised completion and shortened the time. So your first stamp can be a gift from you. A digital card does exactly that.

What Costa did

Costa in the UK dropped points for a free drink after 8 purchases. The Drum reported in August 2022 that transactions grew 16% after the relaunch. The agency's own reason was simplicity and generosity. That is the agency's claim, and Britain is not your market. The point is only that a simple, clear card wins.

The digital card in an Egyptian shop

Google Wallet reached Egypt in late December 2024 in a passes-only form, and Apple Wallet is on every iPhone. The guest adds your card by scanning one code at the counter, with no app. They give a first name only if they want to. The card wears your design: your logo and colours, with AhlanMate small at the bottom.

The cashier stamps from the screen in front of them. Each stamp is a single action that cannot repeat if the network drops, and a correction is recorded with a reason, never wiped.

A good card

  • A small count to start, 6 or 8, so the reward looks close.
  • Two stamps free at the start, as in the car-wash study.
  • A reward that costs you less than its price: a drink, not a meal.
  • No prizes by luck: the reward is earned, not drawn.

One card for many places

The guest holds many venues' cards in one Wallet, so yours sits beside the others in your own design. They never see the other guests' details, and neither do you.

How to replace the paper cards, step by step

  1. Pick the reward and the count: a drink after 8 stamps, say, with a small count to begin.
  2. Give the new card 2 free stamps, so the guest feels already under way.
  3. Print the counter code and give the cashier one sentence: "Scan the code and take your card".
  4. Let the old paper cards work for two weeks: the cashier moves their stamps to the new card, each move recorded with a reason.

Common mistakes

  • A reward too far away: on a card of 20 stamps the guest feels no pull. The goal-gradient finding is that effort rises as the reward gets close.
  • Several card designs in one shop: one clear card is better.
  • The cashier forgets to stamp: make the stamp a scan of the guest's code, not a memory.

The sum

A loyalty card tool alone is about EGP 500 a month at a known provider. AhlanMate does the card and the pager together from about EGP 790 a month, up to 5,000 guests a month. Try it and read your own numbers.
